Sunrise, Inc. promotes the wellness of mind, body and spirit for the physically, mentally, and socially disabled people through therapeutic horseback riding.  The program consists of a weekly riding lesson geared toward the ability/disability of each rider.

There are many physical benefits of the therapeutic horseback riding program:

  • Body Abstraction: relates parts of the horse's body to own

  • Muscular Strength: relaxes, stimulates, and develops muscles while riding

  • Heath and Hygiene: students learn to care for horses

  • Balance and Rhythm: students learn movement and balance by learning to ride horses

  • Directionality: students learn their left from their right

  • Language Development: language used simultaneously with an object, experience or activity enhances learning

The mental and emotional benefits of our program are:

  • Develops Self Confidence: students grasp the feeling of having control over themselves and the horse

  • Improves Concentration & Self Discipline: students level of interest, listening skills, and ability to follow directions increase

  • Provides Emotional Uplift: students realize they can do a difficult tack which many of their able bodied peers cannot

  • Feeling of Independence: riding provides a feeling of complete independence and awareness of one's body that is difficult to achieve through conventional thera
